Tell us a little about yourself and your career?
I grew up the youngest of six kids in Maryland. Storytelling was a huge part of my upbringing, and all of my siblings were also artistic so they inspired and encouraged me to pursue my own craft. I spent my grade school years toiling away at a fantasy epic that I would write secretly during class. The desire to share my stories with others led me to animation where I studied it in college on the East Coast. I moved to L.A. about 12 years ago where I fell in love with background design. I did some commercial work and got my start at non-union studios before landing at Warner Bros. TV where I have been for the last six years.
What do you love most about working in animation?
I adore the collaborative nature of animation. There is nothing else quite like it. To be part of a living, breathing process, and to collaborate with extremely talented artists to bring something unique to the screen, has always been special. I love seeing how the creative process works up close, and I think you get to know people’s personalities and quirks best this way.
Why did you volunteer to serve as a Shop Steward?
I think everyone deserves to be informed and supported. There is so much to know about our rights and our contract that it can be overwhelming to try to know these answers by yourself. I also think strong labor organizing is the best way any of us can take control of our lives and political climate. Workers hold so much more power than they realize, and I want to help strengthen and build those bonds.
As a Shop Steward, what are your priorities in helping TAG members at your studio?
My priorities for TAG Members at WB are making sure we all know each other, so that we will know who to ask when there is a problem and be able to come together for solidarity and labor actions when called upon. I want to make sure members know about things like dismissal pay, Weingarten rights and the workplace safety concerns for ergonomics.
