TAG & IATSE May Day Events

TAG News / no comments

As a member of the Los Angeles May Day Coalition, TAG is proud to endorse this year’s May Day march. The coalition is made up of labor unions, non-profits, immigrant rights organizations, and other groups that support worker and immigrant rights. Every year, the coalition plans the march, puts together the route, coordinates media and press coverage, rally and march speakers and performers, and more. This year’s march and rally is on a Friday, and we expect a large turnout.

March & Rally Peacekeeper Trainings
April 29

May Day March Peacekeepers play a crucial role in keeping the march and rally safe and secure for participants. Volunteers are official members of the march detail crew. The May Day Coalition is hosting Peacekeeper trainings. This is an official training.

  • Wed., Apr. 29, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. – SEIU 721: 1545 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90017

We’ve had several TAG members sign up to do this for past May Day marches. We’d love to see TAG members this year, too!  To sign up, fill out this form: https://forms.gle/bivxvtTCftxHQi9i8

Training is mandatory for those who want to serve as Peacekeepers. Please do not show up at any of the training locations if you have not signed up.

Art Build @ UTLA
Wed., Apr. 29, 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.

The May Day Coalition art build will take place at United Teachers Los Angeles’ headquarters, 3303 Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles 90010. All are welcome!

Getting to the March

Carpooling: Do you need to carpool or can you drive TAG members to the march? Please email Field Rep Leslie Simmons at leslie.simmons@tag839.org and let her know. She can connect drivers with passengers.

The march starts at MacArthur Park and ends at Gloria Molina Park at LA City Hall. Both areas are easily accessible by the Metro subway, which is encouraged. However, if you plan to drive, you’re advised to research the area for parking options in advance. It may be better for drivers to park near City Hall in the morning prior to the march, then take the subway to MacArthur Park, the start of the march. There are lots of parking lots all around City Hall, including at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels on Temple and Hill (555 West Temple Street); the LA Law Library across from the park; and the outdoor mall on Temple and Main. Entrance off Los Angeles St., between the 101 and Main St. There are also lots further out and just a few blocks to walk, including at Union Station.

Attending the March

IATSE March Meet-Up!

Every May Day March, members of all the L.A. IATSE Locals meet up prior to the march and walk together. This year the IATSE meeting point will be between 10 a.m. and 11 a.m. at the corner of Parkview and Wilshire across the street from MacArthur Park in front of the Charles White School. Once the IATSE group has assembled, we will walk over to the starting point of the event.

Volunteer to hold TAG’s banner

We will need TAG marchers to help hold the TAG banner. The banner is long in width, and we will need probably three or four people to hold the PVC pipe the banner is attached to. Ideally, we should have marchers rotate in and out of holding the banner, as it’s a long day, it will be hot, and folks will need breaks. Please contact leslie.simmons@tag839.org if you’d like to help with the banner.

TAG T-shirts

If you do not already have a TAG tee, please let leslie.simmons@tag839.org know. We want you to wear it for the march. We will provide free tees to members who have not received a free one in the past (such as for negotiations rallies, TAG Tuesday photos, etc.) Please provide your size. There are women’s and unisex t-shirts. (Click links for sizes.)

*T-shirts must be picked up at the office in advance by Apr. 30.

Day of March

Please be prepared for May Day hot weather. Wear comfortable shoes. Bring a water bottle and sunscreen. The march route is a little more than two miles. There is a rally at the beginning and at the end at City Hall.
