On August 10, thousands of TAG members and their allies filled the parking lot at IATSE Local 80 for the largest animation union labor rally and event in history. The Stand With Animation Rally kicked off TAG’s negotiations with the AMPTP which began on August 12. This show of support proved that animation workers know what’s at stake and they’re willing to do their part to ensure fair wages and protections in the workplace.
Despite the heat, the crowd’s enthusiasm only grew over the course of two hours as speakers shared the issues TAG is fighting for—as well as unwavering support. Emcee Mike Rianda launched the event with an appearance by TAG’s own “Animation Avengers” who expressed their solidarity: Genndy Tartakovsky, Alex Hirsch, Peter Ramsey, Rebecca Sugar, Shion Takeuchi, and James Baxter. The following speakers included Union leaders, TAG members speaking on behalf of their crafts and issues like AI, community leaders including Burbank Mayor Nick Schultz, and actor/writer Adam Conover who worked up the crowd with a call and response: “When we fight … we win!” If you missed the rally—or want to relive the inspiration all over again—the speeches are available in full on TAG’s YouTube channel.
More than a dozen media outlets covered the rally—on the ground and from the sky—reporting on the crowds, the speakers, and the momentum created by this unprecedented moment. You can read many of the articles here on the TAG Negotiations Website.
There is no question that the Stand With Animation rally turnout and show of solidarity reflects the resolve of TAG’s membership to fight for the wages, benefits, protections, and dignity they deserve. Follow negotiations updates on the TAG website.
